Hangover Cures That Work

hangover party

Rough night last night? It happens. Dust yourself off with these top hangover cures.

Vitamin B12

Having trouble remembering where you parked the car, or even worse, your own name?  The mental fog that typically accompanies a hangover is due to Vitamin B12 deficiency. Head straight to your local convenience store and grab an Odwalla B Monster, do not pass go, do not collect $100 dollars.  Each serving has 360% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin B12.

Magnesium

Alcohol causes magnesium to be excreted out of the body. Your body’s craving for a refill causes that massive pounding headache. The best way to satisfy both your AM hunger pangs and your magnesium stores is to crawl toward the nearest diner and order a spinach omelet with whole grain toast.  Spinach has 66 mg, 3 eggs have 138 mg, and 1 slice whole grain toast has 23 mg.

Potassium

Ok, you had breakfast, but you still feel weak and nauseous.   Grab a banana, or 10! Your body must have potassium to survive, and you left all of your potassium in the sidewalk after the bar closed. Potassium excretion increases during severe intoxication.

Water

Hopefully you drank water between cocktails and before bed last night.  If you forgot this party 101 rule, you better start chugging. Drink water for the rest of the day.  A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that one of the most effective hangover interventions is rehydration.

Caffeine

Caution! To be used in only extreme circumstances, as in, you must be at work in an hour and you still can’t find the car.

Don’t be surprised if you start coming back to life in 8 – 12 hours. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as mom used to say, so next time make sure to take a multivitamin and drink 24 ounces of water before you head out for a marathon happy hour.
