I’ve been a fan of the fitness blog Average Moms Wear Capes ever since I met AMWC blogger Christie O’Sullivan at the Fitbloggin’ conference. Her enthusiasm for fitness and her passion for connecting with people was infectious. I also loved how Christie was a fellow triathlete, so we had a lot to talk about. Christie is also a mother of two, a former journalist, and lifelong writer who found running & triathlon through through a long, post-partum weight-loss journey. Since we first met, Christie has continued to build out her blog, and I asked her a to share a little bit about Average Moms Wear Capes. Check it out!
Fitness, triathlon, soul-searching, motherhood and all of the mayhem in between.
I started blogging after leaving the newsroom to stay at home with the kids and I desperately needed a release for the words that piled up in my head. Over the years, my blog grew from a family blog to a blog about a journey through motherhood and eventually, when my stomach still touched the steering wheel and I wasn’t pregnant anymore, a journey through fitness too.
Christie: I realized after becoming a mom just how many hats moms wear and how much pressure we put on ourselves to be a Super Mom. Sometimes I felt like a failure at all the juggling and after witnessing so much greatness out of the women in my own life, my friends, my own mom, I decided to heck with Super Mom. AVERAGE moms wear capes! I’ve seen it! They wear them when they’re covered in poop from potty training, they wear them in their ability to brilliantly multi-task and pull something, anything, out of their giant purse-holster in 1.2 seconds, they wear them when the mama-bear comes out, and they wear them when they achieve personal victories like crossing a finish line, finding their passion, or being happy with the mom & woman they’ve become.
Christie: I find inspiration everywhere. I will literally pull off to the side of the road and write a blog post on the back of a receipt. I love to celebrate pushing limits and boundaries within our lives and celebrate other women and their accomplishments. I love to write about the things I find funny or crazy in my life and in the news, I write about my struggles and victories in weight-loss, fitness, running & triathlon, recipes, products, I love writing about motherhood and the tooth fairy getting caught — honestly between all of it, there is no shortage of topics. I can find inspiration in a ketchup packet (and have!)
Christie: I accept nominations from anyone! They write me about a mom who should get recognized and I usually just publish their nomination on a first-come-first-serve basis. And we just got a cape sponsor! So now, each Super Mom of the Month gets her own cape from sewplainjane.com! Hooray!
Ooooh, that’s hard. I think I’d want the sleep. My kids get up at o-dark-hundred right now and it’s killing me!
Christie: . . . it literally saved me from myself. The fitness blogging community motivates me, gives me accountability and support, but most of all, it moves me, in every way that a person can be moved. I would not have been able to lose 55 pounds, keep it off and go from couch-to-triathlon without the support and motivation it has given me. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Thanks to Christie for standing in the blogger spotlight! If you have a blog that you want to see featured, post the URL in the comments!
